The Good,
The Bad and
The Ugly
As we approach the New Year,
we re๏ฌect upon the best and most
bizarre 2016 Bollywood ๏ฌlms in our
second annual edition of the Masala
Bollywood Awards. By Krishna Mawani
During 2016, the Hindi film industry saw the release of a number of sequels like Kahaani 2 and biopics such as Airlift and Neerja that
outshone in both critical acclaim and box office earnings. The focus on good content has tripled as star power can no longer solely carry a
film into the 100 crore club as we saw with films like Mohenjo Daro and Baar Baar Dekho tanking at the box office. With the much-awaited
awards season coming up, we bring you our take on the best and most bizarre of Bollywood this year in our second annual edition of the
Masala Bollywood Awards โ€“ donโ€t forget to look out for the brand new categories as well.
Most Controversial Moment: Udta Punjab
The highly-awaited film Udta Punjab starring old flames Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor
Khan was broiled in controversy with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The CBFC
review committee suggested a whopping 89 cuts in the filmโ€s scenes with 15 suggestions to
delete all references to Punjab and its cities, politics and elections as well as all curse words.
Udta Punjabโ€s co-producer Anurag Kashyap was especially outraged at this move against
freedom of speech, with him calling CBFC Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani โ€a dictatorโ€. The war of
words between the two exploded on social media, with an eventual happy ending as the
Bombay High Court allowed the film to release with only one single cut required. However, the
film was leaked one day before the release date on torrent sites and other websites with the
alleged blame on the CBFC as the leaked copy contained the text โ€For Censorโ€.
Most Irritating Song: GF BF
A song that two good looking actors decide to star in typically becomes the next big thing. However
when Sooraj Pancholi and Jacqueline Fernandez appeared in the number โ€GF BFโ€ by Gurinder
Seagal, it didnโ€t follow this typical hype. In the music video, Sooraj tells Gurinder after seeing
Jacqueline that โ€GF ho toh aisiโ€ (a girlfriend should be like this) to which Gurinder replies, โ€Aisi GF ke
liye jigra chahiyeโ€ (you need courage for this type of girlfriend). You also need jigra to bear through
this song, with lyrics such as โ€GF Gโ€ฆ GF banja meriโ€ (become my girlfriend) and โ€Breakfast mein
kisses, hugs honge lunch meinโ€ (There will be kisses for breakfast and hugs for lunch). For a song
in the pop genre, it lacks the peppiness and fast-paced beats, while the random addition of electro
beats does not help, as it seems to only appear for the benefit of the music video.
