Dickinson University in New Jersey, Sahil always knew he would tread upon this
path, as his family is involved in the trade. Having launched his own company in May
2017, the passionate entrepreneur is using online channels to cater to his diverse
customers. He has even collaborated with Indian company Aadara, to create unique
designs that provide the best in the jewellery business.
          What inspired your career path?
I initially didn’t want to get into this fi eld, even though my family business is
involved in jewellery. I always wanted to do something on my own. However, certain
circumstances changed that. My family wanted me to come back and help, so I
ran the business with my uncle and dad. Then I moved to India to expand the trade
and learnt the Indian way of running a business, but the economy wasn’t good. As
a result, we moved back here and I pursued my inner passion to do something on
my own and decided to launch The Trinket Company. I was always intrigued with
enamelling, as you can play around with colours and style to create exquisite and
fun pieces. As enamel doesn’t seem right to put on gold since it’s expensive, I opted
for silver instead. It’s more malleable, so you can experiment with it more.
What have been some of the challenges you’ve encountered since the launch?
The fi rst was the language barrier, so I was quick to hire an employee who is fl uent
in the local language. The other main challenge is the product itself. Jewellery is a
luxury, not a necessity. People are not willing to buy jewellery online because it’s a
really hands-on process. The jewellery we try to create is fun, luxurious and easy on
your wallet, yet in the end, we are still competing with electronics. If you give me
B20,000 today, I would rather buy a new phone than a pair of earrings. We are trying Who do you look up to for inspiration?
to change that mindset by making our product an essential. It shouldn’t be an ‘I My wife inspires me a lot. She pushes me to come up with new concepts. My partner
want it’, but rather has to be an ‘I need this, or I’m going to be left out.’ We need to in India and the owner of Aadara, Krishna Saboo is also my backbone. He has a
keep up with the trends, or create our own trends! good eye for design, so he would send me ideas and say ‘hey, let’s make something
                                                                               like this!’.
What is your favourite part of work?
The whole process of creating jewellery. You think of a design and concept, and then What are your future ambitions?
you talk to your designers to work out the details on paper and eventually go with I want The Trinket Company to grow, establish a good market base and create a
what you like. It’s the process of imagining something in your mind to physically foothold in the jewellery industry. Silver is on the rise, as people are buying more
having it in your hands. That’s the fun part! now just because it’s more cost-eff ective. As more people buy jewellery to match
their clothes, our aim is to create a niche for ourselves in the everyday wear market.
Lastly, what advice would you give
                                                                               start-up entrepreneurs who want to
                                                                               pursue a similar path?
You should not listen to anybody, but
yourself! I have faced a lot of hurdles
and family issues, but that just made
me stronger. Many people were telling
me not to pursue this career since it’s
a saturated market. While it is true,
I am still enjoying what I am doing. I
don’t feel like I have to drag myself to
go to work every day. So just believe
in yourself and go with your intuition,
