Whether it was Sridevi’s white chiff on sari in Chandni
(1989), or the purple brocade sari worn by Madhuri
Dixit Nene in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’s (1994) iconic 2
song ‘Didi tera devar deewana,’ Bollywood fi lms
are known for inspiring trends avidly followed by
the masses. However, unlike the two blockbusters,
sometimes their stylish ensembles are the movie’s
only saving grace. Masala sneaks a quick look at
modern fi lms known for creating a fashion craze
rather than a box offi ce success.
1 Aisha (2010) is far from a cinematic masterpiece. Instead, the fi lm
solidifi ed Sonam Kapoor’s status as Bollywood’s high-profi le
fashionista. The white and grey narrow-fi tted frilled shirt jumpsuit,
designed by Ayesha Depala, was a particular fan-favourite!
2 Kareena Kapoor Khan’s ultra-glam appearance in Kambakkht Ishq (2009), 1 1
designed by Akki Narula, was inspired by a Barbie doll. While the fi lm was
panned by critics and the public, Bebo’s trendy outfi ts, such as the sunshine
yellow baby doll dress, has been touted as her most glamorous ever.
