“I don’t usually watch any Thai soap operas, but after hearing
about BuppeSanNivas from my Chula colleagues, the staff
at my school and my relatives, I told myself that I have to see
what the hype is all about. Unlike other expected storylines
about infi delity or family feuds, the show was loosely based
on Thai history. As a linguist, I had studied old Thai dialect
and I could not fault the language that the characters
spoke. In addition, the clothes they wore and the script’s
wittiness made it all the more believable. This January, I
visited Ayutthaya with a group of friends and we explored the
temples where the story is set, so really everything about the
lakorn appealed to me. It is just diff erent than the usual soap
operas, and having a female protagonist who is strong-willed
and unbending is also great to see. Aww Jao is very OK!”
